Amber Storms: A Short Story

Beep, beep, beep goes Amber’s alarm clock. She rolls over only to see that she is twenty minutes late for school. Amber jumps out of bed and slams her toe on the corner of her bedside table. Her face turns bright red with anger and frustration. Amber just woke up and is already having a terrible day.
Amber walks downstairs to see her mother standing there with Sammy, her dog, on a leash waiting for a walk. She tries to tell her mom how late she is, but to no avail. They bicker back and forth for a while until Amber storms out of the house with Sammy.
Amber is boiling mad. From the moment she woke up, Amber has been having a terrible day. Amber starts her usual walk around the block. Suddenly the man her mother has always told her not to talk to because he looks dangerous comes walking around the corner. He's an oddly tall man with a long scruffy beard and dirty clothes. The man’s face lights up with utter joy. He smiles the biggest smile Amber has ever seen. The man whips around and says, “Why hello little lady, how are you today?”
Amber has a warm happy feeling in her stomach. She quickly realizes that small act of kindness might have just made his whole day. Amber turns away from the man and smiles. She rushes home, grabs her school stuff and sprints to school. Amber can not focus on her school work at all. Her teacher's voice is just a dull murmur being blocked out by her thought of the man. All Amber wants to do is go home and find this man. He is no longer scary to her. Amber wanted to know all about him.
The last bell rings and Amber is the first one out of the school. She runs home and begins looking for the man. “Mom, I’m going to do homework with some friends. I probably won't be home for supper,” Amber yells upstairs to her mother. Amber walks up and down the streets for hours.
