Everyone makes mistakes in their lives, including John Proctor. One example of a mistake John Proctor makes, is his affair with Abigail Williams. Abigail Williams argues, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me” (22)! In Salem at the time of the trials, committing adultery is the ultimate sin. Punishments for adultery are harsh, you could be put in jail, or even sentenced to death. He also makes the mistake of not telling the judge that Abigail said she was dancing in the forest. Proctor claims, “I am only wondering how I may prove what she told me, Elizabeth. His mistake of having an affair with Abigail Williams causes the accusing of Mrs. Proctor and other innocent victims. Abigail is jealous and angry of his wife and accuses her of being a witch. Abigail describes how she feels about Elizabeth, “She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a—”(22). Abigail is jealous of Goody Proctor which causes Abigail to accuse Elizabeth of witchcraft.
