Helping others and being kind is more important than helping yourself

Do you think it’s more important to help yourself? The story “Raymond’s Run” is about a young girl named Squeaky. She is a self-involved, confident and confrontational person who always wants to win. The only thing she needs to do is take care of her brother Raymond who requires special care.
She’s a fast runner and is always winning special racing events in her neighborhood. Squeaky is determined to beat Gretchen who is her biggest competition. In the end she learns that its more important to be kind and help others.
Squeaky takes care of her special needs brother Raymond which she believes is all she must do in life. “All I have to do in life is mind my brother Raymond which is enough.” (Raymond’s Run 279)
She’s confrontational

Without delay she gets into position and takes off running. On her left, she sees Raymond on the other side of the fence running in his own style. “it’s the first time I ever saw that and I almost stop to watch my brother Raymond on his first run.” (Raymond’s Run 289)
Squeaky wins the race and is congratulated by the crowd. All of a sudden, she notices Raymond yanking on the fence and for the first time realizes what a good runner he could be. “it occurred to me that Raymond would make a very fine runner.” (Raymond’s Run 290)
She begins to put herself aside and think of her brother and that she could coach him into being a great runner. “And I’m smiling to beat the band cause if I’ve lost this race, or if me and Gretchen tied, or even if I’ve won, I can always retire as a runner and begin a whole new career as a coach with Raymond as my champion.” (Raymond’s Run 290)
Squeaky sees Raymond’s excitement for running past her own self – involvement. She realizes he needs something for himself. “And I’ve got a roomful of ribbons and medals and awards. But what has Raymond got to call his own?” (Raymond’s Run
