An Essay On A Trip To America

My foot landed on something that I wasn’t expecting: gravel and dirt. I looked down, and all I saw was an endless road of an uneven ground that was the unfolding experience of my trip to Ethiopia. But within the dirty and impoverished country, I witnessed the beauty, and love of a place that I considered my home. I embodied a portion of my country within my blood, and being able to embark on such a journey gave me the authority to delve within myself and discover who I truly was as an individual. The heart of Addis Ababa resembled a fire, black and gloomy, casted with air pollutants and fog. When I first stepped into Ethiopia, I was appalled. Back in America, it wasn’t as if I were seeing children around my age living on the streets, with no one to care for them. The children were naked; they had dust all over their faces and bugs crawling on them. My days consisted of taking walks, and I closed my eyes most of the time because I did not want to see these kids without parents, without someone to hold them. Poverty was at every single corner of Addis. I cried the first night because I couldn’t believe someone would leave these kids. I prayed. I asked for God to give them something worth living for. It was heartbreaking because I couldn't even give them much; I gave them a piece of corn or a couple cents in my pocket. My father and I had a bag of old clothes that belonged to my deceased grandfather. I want to become someone that will not forget my roots, and I’ll go back to them more of the inhabitants. I want to blossom as an individual, and, have people blossom along with me. I want to start somewhere and Addis Ababa; Ethiopia is my starting place. I want to be able to give them something that their own government won’t give
