Bad News Poem Analysis

Improved Essays
I enjoy reading the stuff that Ted Koosier writes. He is extremely descriptive which allows for me to picture what he is talking about in my head as I read. I have never really enjoyed poems at all but reading this book has been persuading my interest about out them. The poem called Bad News is quite saddening. Even though he never really says what the phone call was about in the poem you can only imagine. It reminds me of the time my uncle was hospitalized. There were never phone calls about him dying. However, my grandma always tells us stories of how she would always wake up in the middle of the night and pace around the house just hoping that everything was going to be fine with him. My uncle had been diagnosed with cancer in his …show more content…
Before she got back my dad and I walked over to her house to wait for her to get back from the hospital. As we were waiting he told me how discouraged my grandma was feeling about my uncle. As he talked to me a tear rolled down my check. When she got home my dad talked to her about it for a little bit. When I noticed how rough of shape my grandma was in I quickly grasped her and threw both of my arms around her giving her a gigantic hug. Squeezing tighter now I was able to feel her crying due to the hiccup like breaths taken between each tear. Tears then started to roll out of my eyes down my check and onto her navy blue sweater that she had been wearing. Moments later my dad wrapped his long ape-like arms around the both of us and held onto us tightly. Tears were now rolling down all of our faces and a couple moments after we dispersed from the hug. My dad then made the both of us smile by saying, “How about I mix you a drink.” Both my grandma and I giggled which was followed by a sniffle to clear the congestion that had built up in our noses from crying. Things are better now as my uncle is back to being healthy. He hasn 't had any complications since and is now able to do his dialysis right at home which makes it a lot easier and more convenient for him. He is still working on the farm along with my seventy year old grandpa and is loving life. Hopefully nobody in our family will be getting

The great Depression Imagine, you have a wonderful life with no problems other than having to get out of your squishy bed in your apartment in the morning, and driving your brand new car to work. Then, one day, your life takes a faster turn than a tornado. Your having to work all of the time with aches and pains, and you never have any free time. You can barely pay your bills, for you lost all of your money as if someone took all of the money you used to have and set it ablaze. This was the feeling that the people that lived through the Great Depression felt.…

The poem Dead in There by Langston Hughes is about the death of a successful jazz player. The poem describes the player’s funeral and how he will never be able to play his uplifting music ever again. In the first stanza, line 5 says, “A cool bop daddy.” This refers to someone who played jazz music.…

Growing up as a hispanic woman in America has always been more difficult than I thought it was going to be. There were many times where I felt excluded, judged or like I am not as good as other people. Throughout my life this has always affected my happiness because it was never as easy as I wanted it to be. With that being said, many people that are also a different race also struggle with this problem and this affects their wellbeing as well. I came to realize what a struggle being a person of color is to other people as well after carefully reading a short story by Junot Diaz called “Wildwood” and a poem by Claudia Rankine called “From Citizen Six” where both of the characters were treated unfairly, and ran into issues on a daily basis because…

This poem was deep, and had a lot of emotion. You could tell that the writer had been really hurt and maybe had even been taken advantage of. She had a dark and weary tone, which meant that this was an emotional piece to write and it had a big impact on her life, or someone else’s life. She had a rhythm that flowed nicely, and for the most part the syllables in each stanza matched every time, (which I particularly like).…

I have never been one for poetry. Only recently did Louder Than a Bomb (2008) expose what true slam poetry is to me and introduce me to the depth of what poetry can be. Slam poetry is one of the most powerful art forms I have experienced and getting to see Kevin Coval, an expert in this field, was inspirational. Before Coval took the stage, other talented artist gave powerful performances.…

I didn’t say a thing because I was too scared to know the news yet, I dreaded the worst. Soon after Grandma came back out she resumed making dinner, and Mom and Grandpa were back. There was just a silence waiting to be broken, but everyone just didn’t know what to say. We sat down for dinner and ate while the Indians game filled some of the quiet in the background. I had finally gotten the courage to ask, “Grandpa are you going to be…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

It was actually quite funny. My uncle was stuck in the hospital for a couple of days and when they released him, he had to come home with us because my aunt had to work and couldn’t watch over him. Anyway he stayed with us for about week and we had so much fun. We played games and ate lots of ice cream. Sadly my uncle had to go home, but I’m glad he broke his foot, because I got to hang out…

There are many objects that are symbolizes in the second stanza that can represent more than a simple image. The young child and his family who are unfortunate to be struck by the fallen boy can be seen more than just death by looking at the “young child”(12). The innocence, leaving a child can be symbolized after witnessing the death of someone at an adolescent age. The fateful accident causes the immigrant to lose more than just a life and witnessing a death. Reflecting on the detrimental event the couple would mention how their child would remember this day.…

The death of a loved one is never an easy thing to take in. As you go through the stages of mourning, it seems to get easier to accept it. I have never gone through the stages of mourning. This time the verbs are used to imply sad emotion on every single thing emphasizing on tragedy. As for imagery, in this stanza we find personification: “Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead” The personification of aeroplane is used by the poet to once again emphasize the tragedy by making everyone around feel the same as poet. As for the diction in the third stanza we find excessive repetition of word “my”. This shows the reader how strong was the relationship between the poet and the dead person.…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
