Becka, my best friend and I. Her older sister walked up to us and started making fun of Becka, laughing at her and trying to get us to. I was so shocked and so angry I couldn’t say anything. But I’ll always be proud of my best friend who stood up and said “Don’t make fun of my friend.” It was that day I realized something wasn’t right. Last month Becka ran over to their house, saying she was locked in her bedroom all the time. Her siblings were sent over to bring her home asking “Becka, How did you get out of your room?” and saying “All you do is cause trouble around here.” My best friends mom refused to let Becka go home until a parent came over. Finally, Becka’s mom came screaming at Becka “You belong in a mental hospital. There are worse homes than ours.” My heart bleeds every time I think of Becka. It seems cruel that DFACs leaves her in a home where she’s clearly unloved and mistreated. I often wonder ‘Is Becka alone in her room crying? Are one of her parents telling her how useless she is? Or one of her siblings making fun of her?’ Through all of this my belief has been strengthened that every single person is valuable and should be treated nothing but that. I believe Becka should have a family who loves her. Don’t you? I believe EVERY child deserves to be loved. Don’t you? I believe it’s nothing but wrong to mistreat someone simply because of choices their parents made. Don’t you?
