Nobody is perfect and even the best of people make bad decisions. Those bad decisions might even outweigh the good they have done. This is a lesson that will be learned throughout the two stories Odyssey by Homer, and Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. Two people that are thought to be great heroes make decisions that put being heroes in question. They also make them seem like the best of heroes. Odysseus was away from home for 20 years and he tried his hardest to get back home to see his wife and his son whom he had never seen before. Louie Zamperini was away at war for two years and he spent most of those two years trapped at a POW camp and stranded out at sea. Today the main question is, are they both considered heroes. Louie hit his wife which was a decision that he greatly regretted, while Odysseus cheated on his wife. Louie is still considered to be a hero in most people’s hearts but is he really the hero everyone thought he was. “If I knew I had to go through these experiences again… I’d kill myself” (321). The problem with this quote is heroes never give up and to say that he would kill himself is saying that he would just give up. Unlike Louie, Odysseus never gave up even though at some points all hoped seemed lost Odysseus kept on his long journey and never gave up or lost hope. In this situation Louie is not really referring to the race the race symbolizes how he is in a hurry to get home. Around the same time in the Odyssey, Odysseus was trying to get home as soon as he could, he too missed his family and had longed to see his son whom he had never seen before. They both have many obstacles some more dangerous than others. While Louie faced death in many harsh ways. Then Odysseus facing many tests along his was with monsters including a cyclops.
