Book 1:
Ovid begins in prayer, seeking inspiration from the gods to give him the ability to accurately describe his works in Metamorphoses. He then goes into a detail description of how the earth is created, which contains many similarities to the book of Genesis. The god who created earth is unknown, but after its completion man is born of the clay to rule to world.
Ovid next describes four ages of man. First being the golden age, which is a time of trust, goodness. Sadness and hunger don’t exist and man coexists peacefully. In the silver age, the second age, people began having to work and grow their own food. However, the was still peaceful coexistence. Third was the bronze age. War begins between man. Forth is the iron age, where man becomes completely violent. Wars are raging, morals are gone and nothing is sacred. Even fight amongst each other.

During this theft, Herse steals Mercury’s heart. Minerva grows jealous and causes Mercury to not win the heart of Herse. Afterwards, Jupiter sends Mercury to setup another rape scene.
Book 3:
Agenor, Europa’s father, commissions Cadmus to seek his daughter out. Cadmus fails and is not allowed to return home. Because of this, Cadmus asks Apollo where he should live and Apollo promises to lead him to a new city. During this journey Cadmus kills a serpent and with its teeth, buries them and men appear and fight amongst one another. The survivors agree to peace and Thebes is established.
Cadmus’s grandson, Actaeon, is change into a deer after accidentally seeing Diana nude. Actaeon is then killed by his hunting dogs. Then Juno discovers Semele, Cadmus’s daughter, is pregnant with Jupiter’s child. Juno kills Semele by having her to have Jupiter make love to her as a god. Jupiter saves the child, Bacchus. Pentheus demands that his family not worship Bacchus, but his mother and aunt mistake him as an animal and kill
