Søren Kierkegaard, a 19th century a philosopher, once said, “God…does what is still more wonderful: he makes saints out of sinners.” While Richard J. Mouw, in his book When the Kings Come Marching In, would agree that God redeems sinners he would also argue that God desires to redeem the entire cosmos. God desires to redeem both human souls and the cosmos because both have been infected and distorted by sin. After a careful reading of Mouw’s book, it is possible to piece together a summary of the main points of the book while formulating a response to Mouw’s explanations and his life application. When the Kings Come Marching In is a book centered around the words written in Isaiah 60. Throughout the book, Mouw explores the verses and words …show more content…
When thinking about this, a few examples come to mind. For starters, I am on the soccer team. Soccer games usually get very heated. By remaining calm and showing my teammates and the other team what it means to search for peace in any given situation I can do my part in aiding the transformation of culture on the soccer field. When Mouw talks about sharing in the life of the poor, I can translate this concept to my college life by going out of my way to sit by someone in class or at lunch who rarely has someone to talk to. By simply being a friend, I can do my part in aiding the transformation of culture here at Dordt college. In addition, here at Dordt, I am a business major. It is no secret that there is a lot of corruption in business and commerce in our world. As a result, when I enter the world after my college degree, I can use my Christian education and knowledge of God’s desire for cultural transformation to do my part in aiding in the transformation of culture in the business I am in. This could take shape in many different ways from being an equal opportunity employer who gives fair wages to committing to be a company that sets out to give back to the community it operates in. All in all, God has given me several different cultural spheres to operate in to aid in his plan of cultural

Podmore (2009) explains how Kierkegaard’s struggle with despair reveals a profound psychological of understanding sin. He then goes on to establish how Kierkegaard’s equally insightful theological understanding of grace, answers Kierkegaard’s existential struggle with despair. Only when one is laid bare before God, hiding no part of the self or the horror of its sin, can one receive forgiveness and (self-) acceptance before God. This forgiveness and acceptance nourishes and heals the brokenness that sin produces in our souls (Podmore, 2009, p.…

Throughout When We Were Kings there is a constant duality between Muhammad Ali’s well favored embracement of African culture and George Foreman’s disgraceful contentment with staying an outsider. The film highlights the importance of African-Americans accepting and learning their African roots by showing us the good and bad of the famous “Rumble in the Jungle”. The film proves that an underdog such as Ali can win against a man larger and stronger by enforcing a home court advantage. We cheer for Ali because he is a “real person” and seeks a connection with the natives of Zaire unlike Foreman. Ali illustrates that embracing your “people” and heritage is winning and can overcome bad odds (Gast,…

Richard Mouw believes Heaven will be a renewed creation that includes an embodied existence and cultural life. Now sin does not merely hurt our soul, it has a far deeper grievousness, which, in traditional language, is expressed by saying that sin is an offence against- i.e. an insult to- God, not of course meaning thereby that God is injured in His own nature, but, as God and as Creator”(Riviere). Atonement has been around since the beginning of time, and it seems that it was just a matter of time before sin would take over and the need arose for a sacrifice to resolve all sin to make everything heal from the wounds that sin creates with its power of mass…

This is very effective, because communities that face certain struggles, someone who passed through the same could have the same understanding. For instance, in class we watched a documentary called the Revolution won’t be televised, which took place in Venezuela around 2002. Personally, I never knew who Hugo Chavez was and the work he did in Venezuela. Upon watching the video, I witness some organizing skills from Chavez, in-spite him being the president.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. More than 10,000 people are homeless in Atlanta on any given night, and I was given the opportunity to go and help them. A year and a half ago I went up, from my lovely suburban hometown in Orlando, Florida, to the urban hub of Atlanta, Georgia with my local church’s youth group to help out with the homeless epidemic. Being a veteran of mission trips, I was prepared to help out people who needed help and let the kindness of God move through me like a beacon of love, but I was never prepared for all of it to change the way I viewed life. Morals inculcated in me on that trip still affect my decisions to this day. Morals such as being selfless, having patience, and having empathy profoundly define me as a person because of this trip.…

Rudyard Kipling demonstrates a negative, disgusted view of imperialism in the British Empire. He uses his story, “The Man Who Would Be King,” to convey his message. This novella follows the story of two characters, Dravot and Carnehan, who set out on an adventure to Kafiristan with the goal of becoming kings there. Throughout this journey, Kipling’s dissatisfaction with the British empire is made known. The egotistical behavior of leaders, lack of ‘noblesse oblige,” and continued need for materialistic gain are just three of his main displeasures.…

While there are a plethora of beliefs about how creation of the world came to be; there is no doubt that its creation reflects a part of the image of God. In this paper I will argue according to Athanasius, both salvation and creation represent the duality of the divine and human within Jesus Christ. One of the first arguments that Athanasius makes to prove this is to link Jesus to the creation of the world. The first step of this process is to first discredit the other beliefs about how the world came to be from the Epicureans, Plato, and the Gnostics. For Athanasius this is a crucial step as it establishes the foundation to the dual nature of christ.…
