The millions of people who are forced to reside in these mega slums throughout the planet must find a way of income. All members of the family must contribute to their family’s occupations, and join them when they are of age. Some of the children in the film display a lot of future ambition. We witnessed in “The Harvest” that the children have given up hope, and gave into their parent’s occupation. Even the poorest members of society rely on factory waste and vast garbage sites to acquire revenue. Despite being in a financial struggle his whole life, Shailesh has big dreams of becoming a successful Bollywood actor. He works day and night to support his wife and two children, and will often go to sleep hungry just so his family can eat. The acting lessons Shailesh partakes in also cost a pretty penny, as each member of the acting guild has to forfeit thirty five dollars for a twelve week acting course. Becoming a famous actor from his home town is Shailesh’s ideal culture. Shailesh wants to be known for his acting prowess, and he wants to be able to fund his family’s expenses without grueling rickshaw work. Even if Shailesh’s dreams do not come true, he can still influence his child to actively participate in school. The purpose of ideal culture is for people to blossom and overcoming their real culture, of the norms and values that people actually follow. Many people in Daruvu believe that the only way to achieve their ideal culture is through schooling, so many of the slum residents will positively reinforce good behavior in school. Shailesh also receives positive reinforcement from his acting teacher after Shailesh shows him one of his home-made music videos. The first value in America’s core value is achievement and success, which is also very prominent in India. Americans will go leaps and bounds to accumulate wealth, much like the trash pickers in Daruvu. The second value is individualism, one of America’s favorite ideals is something starting from the bottom and working their way to the top. We see in the film that Shailesh is working his way to the top of the acting chain. He displays hard work in his day job and full time parenting, which also displays America’s first core value. The third American value is hard work, which can be shown by the trash collectors in the garbage dumps, or the woman pickers who raise their children and rummage through garbage full time. A very key fourth step in the American core value is efficiency and proficiency. Despite having the proper equipment for the work shift, the pickers still efficiently sort through the piles and piles of garbage, hoping to find something of value. The fifth value is applying new technology in our daily life. In the film, the workers are in factories with high tech computers and heavy machinery. Eventually, these factories can be put together through the use of machines, negating any use for human labor in the factories.
