He says this early in the story when he is talking about his past and when he was in the park. He refers to the past as something that can never be buried or hidden. Amir moved to the States with his father, Baba, to start a new and better life, but when Amir receives that call from Rahim Khan he feels like his past is crawling its way back into his current life. When Amir receives the call from Rahim Khan telling him that if he returns there is still a way to be good again, and as that is Amir’s wish he returns no matter the risks. The importance of this quotation is that Amir still defines himself guilty since he has never been able to let go of the thought of what happened in that alley years ago. Remembering what happened to Hassan still bothers him to this day. His past keeps on crawling out into his presumably new life and it is a result of him not being able to forgive himself and always defining himself as guilty. Baba says this at the Mahipar checkpoint where the Russian guard asks for a man’s wife, he defends her from getting raped. This is very sacrificial act that Baba commits because the guards can shoot him at anytime but he stands up for what he believes is right, no matter what the consequence may be. Baba’s response in this situation defines him as a brave man and a man that is not scared to stand up for what he believes is right even if that would cost him his life. He is partially doing this to show Amir that he should always stand up for what he believes is right no matter the outcome. This quotation is very important because it signifies Baba’s strength and bravery. This quotation also contrasts the different ideologies present between a father and his son; Baba does not want to all this “indecency to take place” but Amir wonders why he does not let go and move
