That is when Cal climbs on to the plan and it ends up going downhill for him because while drawing up the plan, Cal gets caught and is put in jail. While Cal is serving his time, his father dies from a heart attack and Cal goes home for a few days. When Cal is home he goes to his father’s funeral and the rest of his time he spends finishing the scheme to frame Luttermann. Cal’s plan is successful and Luttermann goes to the slammer. “A Certain Lady” is a short poem written by Dorothy Parker detailing a woman’s thoughts on her relationship with a mysterious man. The poem is written as a monologue about the woman’s ability to appear happy around the man and his inability to gauge her true feelings. Despite her affection for him, he constantly tells her stories of his exploits with women. While the topic itself seems simple in nature, the relationship in question, as well as the poem itself, is quite complex. Each stanza adds layers of complexity to the poem.…

Chrystos is making the argument that all white people have things that they had no idea that they originated from Native American culture and that in a way they are disgracing their culture and beliefs. She assumes that we don’t have Native roots until the end of the poem saying that maybe we have a grandma who was Native American. She is making the stereotype that white people don’t have any regard for other cultures and that whites think they are superior to others. I think “it” is referring to some people who don’t know very much about other cultures and were something or own something without knowing its roots. She does seem somewhat angry because she just wants them to know where the things they have truly came from and how to respect…

    The Victims Poem Analysis

Upon initial reading, “The Victims” by Sharon Olds seems to be a poem that paints the picture of a life of abuse; starting from the dawning of the exploitation and arching over into the life of the abused following the maltreatment. In the work, it is made to be believed that the clear victims of the poem are the speaker and their family—which is a rightful and obvious assumption—but there is another victim that is not as prevalent as that of the speaker and their family: the speaker’s father. After a second read, it is made evidently apparent that although the work does focus on the speaker and their family as the victims of the poem, the ideal that the father is also a victim is explored. Since the father is depicted as an abuser, it is seen…

Most of today’s society has had an experience like the character in Carolyn Kizer’s poem “Bitch”, by meeting an ex-significant lover/partner when visiting a local place. The awkward first moment while making eye contact with one another just like a past experience, often creates a challenge about the appropriate way to act. Especially, if the past experiences was not pleasant and/or was full of male dominance. Carolyn Kizer shows this in her poem through the theme, which is, you should never chase after something that was never really yours to begin with and is more harmful than rewarding. Beginning with the title, “Bitch”, most readers will associate this word to have two possible meanings.…

The World’s Wife is a collection of poetry that successfully challenges society’s preconceptions of what it means to be a woman. While the female voice is often silenced, Duffy focuses on the women who were in the midst of male-centric stories in Biblical, mythological and fairytale narratives. Some may argue that the expectations of women are completely subverted in poems such as The Devil’s Wife, in which the maternal and nurturing image of a woman is replaced by the disturbing portrayal of the infamous child serial killer Myra Hindley. Alternatively, some feminine qualities are also explored in this poem, such as a woman’s dependence on men, as demonstrated by Hindley’s twisted, passionate love for Ian Brady.…
