The Premier’s ANZAC Essay Australian communities reacted to wartime pressures in divisive responses that caused disagreements in Australia. Wartime pressures are the influence or effect that war has on something or someone. Although some wartime pressures resulted in the uniting of Australian communities, the majority of these pressures caused Australian communities to separate such as the amount of death and casualties, the economy changing, war weariness and the Easter uprising. During World War I (WWI), the conscription of men unwilling to enlist into the war caused a great division as well as the government powers increasing and gaining more authority over what happened in Australia during the war. Women also participated in the workforce,…
It also raises the question of racism and whether it will ever be truly eradicated from society or if it will continue to threaten the harmony and unity of Australians. The article has brought forth a topic that has remained unanswered in Australian society. However, some Australians continue to view this topic as a never-ending debate, insisting that it is time to move on. There will only ever be a change if all the people are able to overcome their differences and unite to stand up against racism. Without change the Australian dream will only grow closer and closer to the brink of…
The purpose of this documentary is to illustrate the severity of racial discrimination against people from Asia in Australia. The main message is to heighten awareness (recognition) to the public about the racism society held towards Asian and hopefully abate prejudice since no media work has been produced on this subject. The intended audience range for this documentary is teenagers and the general public in Western countries, especially, Australia where 10% of the population are from Asia, whilst 80% of racial attacks against Asians are ignored. In order to inform the viewers the nature of the problems, choices of archived footage and actuality, interviews of racially attacked victims, statistical evidence and interview from a commissioner of the Australian Human Rights Commission will be displayed.…
From the onset of the invasion of Australia in 1788, supported by the claim that Australia was uninhabited land, ‘Terra Nullius’, a ripple effect of disadvantage began which resulted in intergenerational discrepancies in the educational outcomes of Indigenous Australians. However, the unequal outcomes of Indigenous Australians were, and often still are, attributed to the belief of Indigenous Australians’ inherent inequality to Whites. This is despite the fact that the systems established in post-invasion Australia perpetuated this very inequality through structural and institutionalised racism. The views of race and racial hierarchy which sanctioned these systems continue to linger on and pervade areas of society today, albeit often in a more…
“Thought I told you Abos to get off my premises” (Noelene). The gravity of racism exhibited in the film is a strong reminder of the inequity and discrimination that Indigenous Australians faced both then and now. Body Paragraph 2 – Cultural differences…
This can coincide with Edward Said’s Orientalism but can further examine the notion of ‘revolt’ amongst Indigenous Australians. In the building campaign for constitutional recognition of Indigenous people, moving away from treating Indigenous people as a race must be replaced with the idea of ‘first peoples’. Problem not being race, but more racial discrimination. Indigenous people use self-determination; and express themselves according to their lineages and strong culture that connect them to places and ways of life that have existed long before colonisation. Additionally, by labelling an Indigenous Australians as a ‘race’ and determining laws around their way of life has only enhanced confusion of the Indigenous Identity within Australian society.…
CRITICALLY ANALYSE THE NOTION THAT AUSTRALIA IS AN EGALITARIAN SOCIETY WITH REFERENCE TO RACISM AND ETHNICITY Australia’s essence is ethnically diverse. A provocative euphemism would support Australia as an egalitarian society and to say otherwise would be concealing the truth. By critically analyzing sociological theories together with implemented public policies and societal worldviews towards racism and ethnicity, this essay analyses Australia’s social fabric and competing historical perspectives of racial and ethnic diversity and discernment.…
To inspect and scrutinise this settler construct of stereotypes, the aspects of society such as history and education, government and policies, and the media itself will be considered and explored. Stereotypes, as settler constructs of Indigenous Australians, have twisted and distorted how settlers view Aboriginal peoples, and these fashioned perspectives are prevalent throughout Australian history. One of the overarching stereotypes regarding aboriginal peoples is that they are ‘lesser’ than the white man, as seen in this scientific report by a Cambridge university professor, “…evidence points to their lowly status, because of the frequent occurrence of characters very rare to the white races of mankind, but at the same time normal in the ape tribes.” (Duckworth).…
Aboriginals represent 3% of the population but 27% of the nation’s jail population. This is outrageous as it shows that race plays a major role in people being incarcerated. This problem stems from the racial divide which is embedded in our society still today. Although we believe that we have gotten past the discrimination that the indigenous Australians face it is still a major problem facing Australian society.…
Racism is not a new phenomenon for human beings, and people suffered from discrimination in the past for centuries. Racism and discrimination have had a significant role in defining the health of Aboriginals whether mentally or physically. The definition of racism as difined by Grosfoguel (2011) is, “a global hierarchy of human superiority and inferiority, politically culturally and economically produced and reproduced for centuries by the institutions of the capitalist, modern/colonial world-system”. There is no doubt that racism can affect the community structure negatively. Recent studies suggest that people who had experienced ill treatment as a result of discrimination between color and race are at risk of physical and psychological diseases.…
A primary issue within Indigenous affairs is the intergenerational disadvantage, however, another key issue is the frequent discrimination and racism. Beyondblue have stated Australia is still a society in which 1 in 5 individuals openly admit to having racist attitudes towards Indigenous people (2014). Many Australians are aware of the discrimination that exists yet, many do not understand that it is directly connected to the nation's history of colonisation. This issue is also perpetuated by the many statues and monuments around Australia, that represent a one-sided history and silence the Indigenous communities as the first people of our land. This paper will analyse the issue of historic racism through monuments and argue that there are…
The country of Australia was built on racism. This land was taken and those who first came here, such as Matthew Flinders and James Cook. They took the land away from the indigenous people of Australia and killed them off with no remorse. They looked at them as if they weren’t even human, as if they weren’t even worth keeping alive, and yet those same very people end up being revolutionary names in Australian History and even having universities named after them. Even after the complete settlement of Australia, we saw immense amounts of racism coming from the government.…
Racism has existed in the human history since the conception of human race itself to the current society and it influences people’s relationships and attitudes to one another. Racism is the complex belief that members of one race have characteristics and abilities that are superior or inferior. The different traits are believed to distinguish one race from another. Racism is normally seen in political arena and other social interactions (Lentin 24). Furthermore, racism causes the feeling of prejudice and discrimination.…
Oscar Wilde once said, “the truth is rarely pure and never simple”. The culture of a nation, a community, or a group, is what moulds our attitudes, beliefs and values. A dictionary definition of ‘culture’ is: “the behaviours and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group”. The three categories of culture - social, ethnicity, and age - are what influence a human to support or disapprove society and occurring events. Over many centuries, racial understandings from cultural influences, have manipulated the we have perceived society and events.…
Racism is usually defined as any form of discrimination that is based on either race, nationality, cultural contextual, or ethnicity. It is evident that its existence in the modern world is caused by imbalance whereby a certain group of people or community controls other groups in different ways that can be in accidental form or intended form. Racism is brought about and fueled by histories, culture, social, and disparities in within a society. Factually, racism in Australia and other countries in the Western world was formerly accepted and supported and presented by the government. It used to be of different forms such as rejection of minority groups.…
