Anesthesiologist Career

The primary responsibility of an anesthesiologist is to provide sedation and pain relief to patients before, during and after any surgical procedure. Although a career in Anesthesiology can be financially rewarding and emotionally gratifying, a person must be willing to spend twelve years of their life attending medical school, becoming an intern and looking for a job practicing anesthesia. In order to attend a medical school, the student must complete a four year bachelor’s degree prior to submitting an application. Most pre med students tend to major in a science since medical school is focused on science. ”Majoring in the biological sciences is desirable because not only is it interesting, it is also very convenient for most biological science majors have already incorporated all the medical school prerequisites”(Edward Chang). Once qualified, an anesthesiologist can select where they would like to work. A hospital, a health care clinic or a private sector are a few places where an anesthesiologist can work. Working in a hospital provides the anesthesiologists with different cases, but working in a private sector, such as plastic surgery, the anesthesiologists are expected to see the same cases. It all depends on the environment the anesthesiologists would like to reside in. It is recommended by recruiters to provide a cover letter with the resume that states all the physician’s accomplishments, this will increase the chances of getting an interview.
