Guarded by barbed-wire fences, high walls, and twenty-four-hour guards, it struck fear into the hearts of the Outer Party members. As a result, love itself was feared and, unless directed towards Big Brother, unaccepted. It was impressed on citizens that all other forms of love were uncomfortable and loathsome.
