Animal Farm is well-known throughout the western hemisphere. It is taught in most high schools and is highly regarded for its political satire. I became enthralled by the book when I was a freshman in high school. Being a fan of early 20th century history, I immediately caught many of the historical references Orwell had placed in the book. The idea of fusing a fictional story with non-fictional elements was foreign to me, and animal farm helped me to realize that many books have deeper more critical meanings hidden within. As I grew older, I found that the book was far more than a simple satire on Stalinism. I eventually realized that the book had a great deal to say about the general nature of law and governance too.
