One such input that has been a main cause of my view on the world is being an American. Outputs of being an American towards my environmental value system are that in America develop a lot of technology that we are spoon fed that says that it can help the earth. Living in America has caused me to think of humans as one of the most important organisms on earth, since we have displaced so many different ecosystems in order to make a home for ourselves. There are 4 million miles of public roads and 2.5 million miles of oil and natural gas pipelines and approximately 160,000 miles of high-voltage transmission lines. With so much land being used for items that human’s think they need to survive, and always having new technology to fix problems it is hard to think about losing all these things to protect the environment. Other inputs that affect my few on the environment are that I show pigs in 4- H, this gives me first hand experience with how animals respond to change. I know that animals have a hard time even reacting to small changes in their environment thus making me think about these things when I see things displacing animals. The ideas of having small changes in environment makes me think about the bison in Yellowstone National Park. I understand why the farmers would be concerned about their cattle, being that they are their main source of income. My …show more content…
Some realizations that I had are that there are so many viewpoints about environment, and how even different governmental systems have different viewpoints about how the environment should be treated. Other realizations that I had were about how many resources I use every day and how poorly we would be treating the earth if everyone else lived like me. During the activity in class when we looked at our ecological footprints I found out that if everyone lived like me we would be using 4.9 earths. This made me feel better and feel a need to thank the LEDC countries for allowing us to live the lives that most Americans live, by having a lower standard living and not be concerned about their wants but more of their needs. Ideas that I was curious about was with the bison and Brucellosis. I was wondering what the odds were that a cow would actually eat the grass that a bison had just given birth on. Another question that I had about the bison was do bison actually give birth in the winter. I found out through the Yellowstone National Park website that they bison mate in late July through August; give birth to one calf in late April or May. This unit has taught me many valuable lessons about the value of other opinions and other ways of life to the function of earth. I have learned about the things that I do every day that I would have never thought would hurt the environment. I am thankful that I know what
