Anzia Yezierska College Essay

In the essay “College”, the author Anzia Yezierska tells us about her first year’s college experience. While I was reading her story, I recalled my journey from India to the United States. I packed my entire luggage a week early and was eagerly waiting for the day just like Yezierska. When that day came, I felt homesick as I would have to stay away from my family, parents and relatives. As it was my first flight journey I was so thrilled and mesmerized. I got a window seat and peeped through my window. I felt amazed while watching the twinkling cities, the moving clouds, the plain sky with both sunrise and sunset and also the beautiful oceans. It was just an awesome journey like the one Yezierska experienced. “I felt like Columbus starting out for the other end of the earth, I felt like the pilgrim fathers who had left their homeland and all their kin behind them and trailed out in search of the New World”(36). Yezierska claims that“like a dream mounting on a dream was this college town, this New America of culture and education “(36). On the other hand enrolling in Central Connecticut State University for my Masters made me more curious to know so many things such as lifestyle, culture, language, environment, campus and the most importantly making new friends. As Yezierska have experienced, she said, “I got so wild with rage that I seized the hurdle and right before their eyes I smashed into pieces. The whole gymnasium went still as death. The teacher’s face was white. ‘Report at once to the dean’” (39). I too had a same experience, one day I was a bit late to the class.
