Are Competitive Sports Good For Kids? ¨One million boys play high school football. There are only about 19,500 football scholarships to college.¨(Crouch, 2015) Many parents think that if their kids are all-stars in their high school sport, then they might get a scholarship to a good college. They might even go pro. Other parents are much more realistic. They know that scholarships are rare and they believe the mental and physical tolls aren't worth the benefits. It is clear that overall playing competitive sports have too many negative effects on kids. Playing competitive sports is harmful to kids because, it can hurt their mental health, it can hurt their physical health, and the intensity level is too high.

One reason that competitive sports are harmful to kids is it can hurt their mental health. For example, it is very stressful to balance academics and sports. Many kids have late night practice along with after school practice. This causes homework to be done late into the night or not done at all (Bankert, Competitive Sports). Also, kids may have to give up other interests. “They may have to sacrifice other interests and give up most of the downtime that allows them to just be kids” (Stenson, 2013). There are many ways competitive sports can damage mental health and these are just a few.

“Sports can help kids learn life lessons like leadership and teamwork.” (Stenson, 2013). However, if they have no time to hang out with their friends, then they won't gain these skills. Jacqueline Stenson says, “They may have to give up the down time that allows them to just be kids.” (Stenson, 2013). It is clear that competitive sports have negative effects on kids because, it can hurt their mental health, it can hurt their physical health, and the intensity level is too high.
