The EPA, for one, signed a law banning the use of mercury in AA and AAA batteries in 1996. This was revolutionary because mercury is a very dangerous substance, and with the treatment of batteries, could have caused even more destruction than has already occurred. There have been other legal measures set in place to attempt to solve this such as California banning the disposal of batteries.
