Argumentative Essay: Curfew Laws For Minors

Improved Essays
Anyone under the age of 18 years of age is considered to be a minor in most states. (www.wehavekids.com., paragraph one) A curfew law of 9:00 P.M. – 6:00 A.M. needs to be implemented in all states. There are a few exceptions within the law for those minors that either have a job or an event they are required to attend. (www.wehavekids.com., paragraph one) With a curfew law in place, the crime rate would decrease at least by half. And even the rate for teen pregnancy would decrease.
If I were to ask 20 people how they feel about curfews for minors, I’d probably get 20 different opinions. This topic is not an easy topic that will have an agreement agreed upon in an easy way. The majority of the major towns and cities around the world have had

(www.debate.org., 2nd paragraph) No parent wants to see their child get killed on the street. A curfew is about keeping minors safe not violating their rights. (www.debate.org., 2nd paragraph) Minors that are on the street past a curfew are likely to be involved in a gang, drug deals, break –ins, and assaults. There are 6.5% of high school seniors that smoke marijuana daily, up from the 5.1% five years ago. Even in the 8th grade 1.1% of 8th graders smoke marijuana daily and in 10th grade there are 3.5% that smoke marijuana daily. (www.deabte.org, paragraph 9) In 2008, 56.2% of underage drinkers (ages 12-20) reported that their last use of alcohol occurred in some else’s home. (www.deabte.org, paragraph 19) If the minors would have been home then they would not have consumed the alcohol.
Did you know that 15% of juvenile crimes occur during the standard juvenile curfew hours of 10:00 P.M and 6:00 A.M.? If there were a curfew set then the crime that is committed by minors would be 85% of what it is now, which could save many lives. Juveniles have committed 16% of all violent crimes. (www.deabte.org, paragraph 19)
I agree that there needs to be a curfew for minors in all states. The crime rate, teen pregnancy rate, and the death rate in minors would not be as high if there were a curfew. I remember as a child I was to be home by dark or either with the street lights came on. Today, parents do not care when their children are home or care what they are out doing. A curfew could not only protect the community but the minors too. Keeping your minor inside after 9:00 P.M. would make you as a parent feel more responsibility in your

    v. State of Florida. I chose to go with the minority opinion, there are many reasons as to why a minor would be out past 11 p.m. From many past experiences, I can recall times when I had to errands. There are many reasons as to why a minor would be out during that time, such as family emergency, last minute errands, or even school projects with a friend. A curfew time should not be set by the law; this is more of a personal family problem that each family can solve by themselves. I believe that a curfew should be set by the guardian of the…

Despite this split, most (63%) violent crimes committed by juveniles occur on school days. Nearly one-fifth (19%) of juvenile violent crimes occur in the 4 hours between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on school days. A smaller proportion of juvenile violent crime (15%) occurs during the standard juvenile curfew hours of 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. (inclusive of both school and non-school days). The annual number of hours in the curfew period (i.e., 8 hours every day in the year) is 4 times greater than the number of hours in the 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. period on school days (i.e., 4 hours in half of the days in the year). Therefore, the rate of juvenile violence in the afterschool period is 5 times the rate in the juvenile curfew period (inclusive of both school and non-school days).…

A national survey showed that by the time children are in eighth grade, 27% have used alcohol; and, by the time teenagers are in twelfth grade, 66% of them had used alcohol (Gonchar). In another national survey, 54% of high schoolers say that they have access to alcohol at any time (Jacinto). This is a major problem in today’s society. Teens are choosing to break the law, and not worried about the consequences or what others think. Teenagers still find ways to access alcohol, even though it’s illegal for them to drink.…

Underage binge drinking rates have also decreased from 19% in 2005 to 14% 2014 (“Underage”). It is safe to say that while underage is an issue, it is an issue that is declining, and assumably from the minimum drinking age law. Also, by lowering the drinking age, alcohol would be more easily accessible for children. Most people are still high school students when they turn eighteen. If they were to be granted the right to drink at this age, illegal distribution of alcohol would be easier to…

More than 25,000 lives have been saved from this law. This law continues to prevent tragedies such as car crashes and many other risks young people may encounter while drinking alcoholic beverages. The age limit was based on previous research which shows that younger people react differently to alcohol than the way older people do. Young adults, or even teenagers, get drunk twice as fast as older adults do, but have more trouble knowing when they should stop consuming alcohol. If the legal drinking age was lowered to eighteen, I feel that it would make an even bigger problem for the citizens of the United States.…

Many parents allow their child under the age of 18 to be out past 11 pm. I strongly believe the law should have no part into setting a curfew for children, their parents should strictly be the ones to do that. T.M vs. State of Florida In this case I am for the strict interpretation of the laws because the right to have freedom of assembly is very important. Every American should have equal rights but the person that is in charge, just like the guardian of the minor should be able to restrict these rights.…
