Astronomy is an ongoing process because we are always working on new and improved things. Right now NASA is planning a one way ticket to mars. NASA is building a ship powerful enough to take people to Mars, it will have enough supplies for 1,100 days in space. They are sending down overs to build the station and bring supplies. They will not come back on this mission but hopefully next time they will.
Scientific discoveries have influenced society by even some of the earliest times. For example, did you know the Mayan calendar was one of the first calendars and was the basis of all calendars. The mayans used their pyramids as a calendar, they had four stairways with 91 steps each and a platform on the top making a total of 365 steps. The basic supplies you will need lots of oxygen, a very strong heat resistant spacesuit, and lots of food. The more detailed supplies are a base, a rover, and a rocket out of the planet.
