To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel written by Harper Lee that’s placed in Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930s. The story is mainly focused around the adventures of Scout and Jem Finch and their friend Dill. One of their biggest adventures is the trial of Tom Robinson, a case which affects them personally. Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem’s father, is a lawyer who defends Tom Robinson, an African American man who is accused of raping a young girl. Even though evidence points to Tom being innocent, he is convicted and later killed when he tries to escape. Atticus plays a very important role in To Kill a Mockingbird and he is by far the most sympathetic character for several reasons. In fact his whole family is hated on and shunned in some ways, but that doesn’t stop Atticus from doing what he believes is right. Although, Atticus is worried about his children and “what bothers [him] is that [Scout] and Jem will have to absorb some pretty ugly things” (Lee 116) and it’s true, Jem and Scout do eventually have to absorb some pretty nasty things. But this doesn’t stop Atticus, he just keeps going, full steam ahead. Even after the trial is over, Atticus still receives some hate and even a death threat from someone. According to Miss Stephanie Crawford, “Mr. Bob Ewell stopped Atticus on the post office corner, spat in his face, and told him he’d get him if it took the rest of his life” (Lee 290), and yet Atticus is unconcerned. He believes that Bob Ewell just needed to let go of some anger after the trial and doesn’t really give it a second thought.
