What exactly makes a sin, a sin? Is it the act of doing something wrong in your eyes? Or in others eyes? Equality 7-2521 believes that a sin was writing in his journal, writing about his thoughts, and actions. To Equality 7-2521, in the introduction of the story a sin is what others see you doing wrong and what you see doing wrong. At the end Equality 7-2521 believes that a sin is what you do, if what you do is unacceptable, and is harming a personage directly or indirectly. He knows that by the way he acts and thinks, others also know he is different for those same reasons, but considering what the government is saying that being different is bad, Equality 7-2521 is bad. He thinks about how he deserves to be with the Scholars instead of the Street Sweepers. He created the first light bulb even though he is a Street Sweeper. Equality 7-2521 knows that the community does not live as one, as a result if they did, he would be able to be with the Scholars. "I am done with the monster of 'We,' the word of serfdom, of plunder, of misery, falsehood and shame" (Anthem-97) the government is trying to make everyone believe that everyone is equal in every way, causing the use of "we" instead of "I". Using the word "I" is not a sin, it is not bad in anyway, it is saying that you are an individual, that you are atypical. Equality 7-2521 wants to be different than everyone else, he wants to be better than where he is stationed, and he is unable to do that with the use of "we". It is not a sin to want to be deviant, it is not a sin to have an opinion on something. Equality 7-2521 realizes that just because he thinks and acts the way he does that it doesn't mean he is bad, it means that he can do great things if nothing is holding him back from doing
