There were about 650,000 troops from Germany’s allies that supported them in battle. The invasion arose when the German units attacked the Soviet’s with bombs. German soldiers destroyed most of the Soviet air force on the ground and captured the remaining. There was nothing left to do but surrender, when the troops were caught. The oncoming Russian winter took the Germans by surprise. None of them had expected to still be at war during the winter. Soviets’ used the rubble and ruins of their city to turn it into a massive fort. In November of 1942, the Soviet Union rebooted and fought back. The cold winter deprived the Germans’ of their strength and health. In an attempt to regain supplies, the Nazi’s went out to search for reinforcements and caches. However, the Soviet Union cut of the German soldiers from the airport and their supplies. The Nazi’s were ordered to remain in place by Hitler. But as hours of waiting turned into days and days turned into months, for the first time, the Nazi’s surrendered. On January 31st of 1943, a man named Von Paulus surrendered the German forces. Then, on February 2nd the remaining German forces surrendered. The Battle of Stalingrad had officially ended on February second, after 199 days of combat.
