Again, the show attempted to showcase reality, but failed, and instead created a falsified reality. Selecting stereotypes provides multiple personality types that reality contains, but stereotypes are a generalization of a group, and they do not represent “real world” people properly. The main reason for showcasing a variety of personalities is for entertainment and to attempt to stir-up conflict because like previously stated, reality TV and its viewers love drama. These personality conflicts occur on a day to day basis, but people are not strategically placed within an isolated living environment in order to create these conflicts. For example, Beauty and the Geek was a competition show with challenges within it. So, essentially to remain on the show you had to exhibit knowledge in an area to win the challenge. As for Big Brother, the show was a competition to stay in the house, but there were not any challenges they had to compete in along the way. These people were also completely cut off from the real world. Which shows a false sense of reality because society is constantly connected. Cutting people off from the outside world does not support the fact that it is a reality TV show because that is not reality.
Even though reality shows do not showcase a realistic approach to reality, they present important themes and lessons for the audience to consider. The first important lesson from Beauty and the Geek is, do not judge a book by its cover. This show presents this message by showing that even though the guys participating on the show appear nerdy and unattractive, they are some of the greatest people anyone will ever meet. This is an important lesson for our society because life is changing rapidly, and with so many
