Intimate partner violence occurs when either physical, sexual, psychological, or emotional violence is committed by one or both partners that are in an intimate relationship, an intimate relationship being people who are married, unmarried and co-habitating, or dating (Garner & Black, 2009). Both social learning and self-control theories have to been used to analyze what causes a person to use intimate partner violence.
