Multiple Forms Of Personality Assessment

Ever since I could remember, I have always been skeptical about personality assessments because I simply assumed they all have high levels of generalizability. However, this class has helped open my eyes to the different forms of personality tests and their benefits. I never took the time to think about the different forms of determining qualities of an individual’s personality. Whether it is a projective test (e.g., the Rorschach Inkblot test) or objective test (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), psychologists have utilized multiple forms and variations of personality assessment to aid individuals, and psychologists, in better understanding that individual. For this example of S Data (i.e., self-reported data), all the questions followed a Lickert Scale format, which helps determine a participant’s preferences or degree of agreement of a statement to investigate the participant’s attitudes towards something. The use of this question can be very effective when trying to determine a component of an individual’s personality in terms of the different categories (i.e., the five factors), and seeing how one scores in each one of the categories. Throughout the questionnaire, there were multiple questions discussing similar issues. An example of this was when the items on political ideologies, where the first one discussed whether the individual is more liberal and the second question asks the opposite, if he/she is more conservative. This technique allows individuals that may be confused on a certain question to give their response from different perspectives while creating an easier, more definitive pathway to your personality. Conversely, this can also be problematic to the individuals who are uncertain of their ideals as they will provide different answers each time. Nonetheless, asking questions using different terminology and syntax makes it easier for the individual to express their true sentiments or ideals, diminishing the element of confusion. When interpreting my results, the website does a great job in breaking down each of the five categories of personality. The website, however, could have done a better job in breaking down each subcategory in relation to the test-taker.
