Personal Narrative: The Benjamin Franklin Effect

3. Once you make the sales pitch, don't say anything else.
This works in sales and business, but it can also be applied in other ways. My boss at an old job was training me and just giving me pointers. I was working at a fitness center trying to sell memberships. He told me that once I got all the small talk out of the way and presented the prices, that the first person to talk will lose. It didn't seem like a big deal but it actually worked. Often there were long periods of awkward silence as the person tried to come up with some excuse, but usually they bought.
4. The Benjamin Franklin Effect
The pencil one may seem far-fetched, but I find the basis of it (the Benjamin Franklin effect) is very useful and extends far beyond pencil borrowing.

8. If you get yourself to be without a doubt happy and excited to see other people, they will react the same to you.
Equal and opposite reactions. It doesn't always happen the first time, but it will definitely happen next time.
9. The physical effects of stress — breathing and heart rate — are almost identical to the physical effects of courage.
When you're feeling stressed from any situation, immediately reframe it: Your body is getting ready to be courageous, it is NOT feeling worried, scared or stressed.
10. Pay attention to people's feet.
If you approach two people in the middle of a conversation, and they only turn their torsos and not their feet, they don't want you to join in the conversation. Similarly, if you are in a conversation with a coworker who you think is paying attention to you and his or her torso is turned towards you but their feet are facing in another direction, they want the conversation to end.
11. Fake it 'til you make it. Confidence is more important than know-How.
Don't be intimidated by anyone, everyone is playing a role, gambling a character and wearing a

When feeling anxious, clean up your home or work space.
You will feel happier and more accomplished than before.
17. Going into an interview ... be interested in your interviewers.
If you focus on learning about them, you seem more interesting and dynamic. (Again, people love to talk about themselves.)
18. Pay attention, parents: Always give your kid a choice that makes them think they are in control.
For instance, when I want your son to put his shoes on, you would say, "Do you want to put on your Star Wars shoes or your shark shoes?"

Pro-tip: In some cases, this works on adults.
19. When a group of people laugh, people will instinctively look at the person they feel closest to in that group.
20. If you want to build rapport or gain someone's trust quickly, match their body posture and position.
If someone is sitting with her legs crossed, cross your legs. If they're leaning away from you lean away from them. If they're leaning towards you, lean towards them. Mirroring and matching body position is a subconscious way to tell if someone trusts you or is comfortable with you. If you're sitting with your arms crossed and you notice someone else is sitting with her arms crossed, that is a good indicator that you have/are successfully built/building rapport with that

The literature selected focuses on the differences between the genders in nonverbal communication. There are several nonverbal functions and forms that could be discussed, but this literature review primarily focuses on the points that are relevant to the analysis. The section concludes with several key criteria points that the analysis will be based off of. Julia T. Wood explains that there are three main functions to nonverbal communication: To supplement verbal communication, to regulate interaction, and to “convey the bulk of the relationship level of meaning” (2014). While the first function will not apply to the analysis in this paper, the two others will.…

After watching some gameplay videos for the new ps4 game Until Dawn, I was reminded of a strange term I had once heard, the butterfly effect. Upon seeing this, I decided to do some research to find out more about it. The Chaos theory more commonly called the butterfly effect summarized by Edward Lorenz is a branch of mathematics that deals with complex systems whose behaviour is highly sensitive to slight changes in conditions, so that small alterations can give rise to strikingly great consequences. With this, I thought a many life decisions that I had made, both large and small and thought of how they affected my life and how different my life would be if I had chosen to take another path. I am a Christian and with further thought, came to…

Icon 8: Questions 1 (p. 31) and 1 (p. 32) 1) What therapeutic value do you see in asking members to make eye contact with another person in the group as they are talking about a problem area? This writer believes the therapeutic value that can be found in group members making eye contact with another person in the group as they are talking about a problem area is that group members are able to observe the others reaction and emotions that go along with the verbal communication. It is easy to misinterpret something that is being said or to miss something when one is not aware of nonverbal. By sitting forward in the chair and maintaining an erect, attentive posture, I communicated genuine interest and complete engagement during the discussion. Moreover, I made appropriate use of minimal responses by maintaining eye contact without staring, nodding my head to confirm understanding, while using utterances that indicated I was paying close attention. Through this experience, I learned that using attentive body language goes a long way in clients feeling comfortable during the interaction, resulting in a smooth conversation leading to quick rapport building, and contributing to free flowing dialog. Subsequently, the importance of attentive body language cannot be overstated.…
