In the epic poem Beowulf the town is fearful because of a terrorizing fire breathing dragon. This is when Beowulf, the hero of the story, is summoned once again to help. He goes to slay the beast only to find that he can no longer fight like he used to. This puts Beowulf in a dangerous situation where he needs rescuing from another. This is similar to How to Train Your Dragon in which Hiccup the main character also seen as the hero traps the evil Night Fury. He realizes here that he did not want to hurt this creature, so he starts to let it go. When Hiccup does this, Night Fury pounces on top of him leaving him with more than he can handle. In this aspect, I believe the author of How to Train Your Dragon used this to then create the rest of the book.
