the name was given by West Berlin for “protection”. Fascism is “characterized by strong nationalism, an extreme level of authoritarianism, corporatism, militarization, and hostility towards both liberalism and Marxism.” the irony in this is that this is somewhat the opposite of what is actually going on. East Berlin was democratic while the east was showing to be leaning towards signs of tyranny. Therefore this term was meant to make the people from the west get into a certain mindset. This being that was they are is the best place to be and the Berlin wall was a guard to block out the fascist. Furthermore, the walls name was then a term to keep the people of West Berlin in, basically brainwashing on some levels into thinking they had it good. The wall was a symbol to many, to some protection and to others the prevalence of tyranny. Many Germans attempted to cross over to the other side for freedom. Up to 5,000 germans crossed successfully out of the many many that attempted. Through this time there were various ways the people came up with in order to cross, some went through the border opening that was found but that resulted in times to be highly unsuccessful. Some were shot down and some were caught. One woman tried to cross with her husband and baby but in order to cross silently without getting shot, she has to give the baby pills in order for it to sleep or keep quiet.
