Billy Graham Racism

Racism is a huge problem in our country even now, but especially in the thirties in the deep south. This also happens to be the setting of our novel, To KIll a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. The actual story takes place in Maycomb County, Alabama in a small rural town. A couple main characters in the book are two small children named Jem and Scout who are siblings. The main event in the story is a trial for an African-American man named Tom Robinson who has been accused of raping a white woman by the name of Mayella Ewell. This affects the children very directly because their father Atticus Finch, is a lawyer who has taken the case and is defending the man accused of the crime. Racism is a frequently mentioned topic in the book and in this town it is a very common problem. Billy Graham refers to this problem and says, “Racism and injustice and violence sweep our world, bringing a tragic harvest of heartache and death.” He is saying that racism is a huge problem in our world and all it does is create pain and hurt.

To Kill a Mockingbird, a riveting story of class-ism, the struggle of the great depression, and racism in the south. The racism is very well highlighted by the main problem of the book, a court case involving a black man, and people not wanting to give him a fair trial. This story is packed full of Jim crow laws and other racist outlooks from the time, and I will give some examples of these racist and discriminatory ways of life. One early example is when a kid shouted out loud that scouts father, a fair and impartial lawyer, “defends Negros”. This really shows kids during the day were heavily influenced by Jim crow and racism.…

Hitler, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr. are three people who are known worldwide for trying to change the world either for better or for worse. In these peoples’ lives, what common issue drove their motives and actions? Racism. Racism is what people often associate slaves, African Americans, and even common problems in today’s society (such as the riot “Black Lives Matter”) with. However, the argument can be made that racism was a much larger problem in the 1930s, which is when the events of To Kill a Mockingbird took place.…

When most people think of intense racism, they think of the horrible ways people of color were treated many years ago. Unfortunately, many people think racism is a thing of the past, when this is, in fact, false. In Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, racism is shown as common practice to many and a monstrosity to very few. Unfortunately, in the small town of Maycomb County, racism wins out as an African American man named Tom Robinson is falsely accused of raping a woman and is sentenced to death. School districts have stated that the same themes can be taught through use of other literary methods that do not contain offensive language such as when Lee uses “nigger.” Due to the current race relations, the themes of racism and prejudice used in To Kill a Mockingbird are topics that stand relevant.…

Atticus ignored the rest of the people in Maycomb and went out of his way to support a black man known as Tom Robinson, who was accused of rape. Racism is the key theme in the novel.…

Racism stands for more than one thing. In this case Harper Lee expresses that the theme in “ To Kill A MocKingbird” is you should never judge or mistreat someone because of their skin color. In this book a black man was found guilty for raping a white women when he was clearly innocent, in addition he was also shot 17 times because he was black. In some cases shooting someone 17 times and is unarmed is called overkill. So, therefore, racism is still a big thing in the U.S. today Tom Robinson, an African American man found guilty for a crime he didn’t commit such as raping a white women, whose name is Mayella.…
