Then I became enlightened by the biomedical sciences during the biochemistry unit in my 9th grade biology class. One day a would-be 30-minute tutorial turned into a three-hour lesson. I asked every question in my arsenal: How can gene targeting help prevent disease? What are genetic markers and what can they tell us about human development? The list went on endlessly until finally my teacher could no longer answer my questions. I went home that day with a peaked curiosity and an unsatisfied mind. I had to know more. Since then, I can find myself at any given time reading for hours about the newest biomedical discoveries that impact our world today. As the leader in genetic and biological research regarding disease, the CDC is the perfect place to embark on my aspirations. As a CDC researcher, I would have access to infinite possibilities within the global sphere of disease prevention, traveling to continents as far as Africa to fight major pandemics such as Ebola and yellow fever. I want to research and create new vaccinations and medications, bringing hope to families affected by diseases.
