College seemed like a far-fetched dream when I was a child. No one in my family has gone to college, or even finished high school for that matter. It almost seemed like I was destined not to go to college as well. You see, I wasn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, no; I was at the other end of the spectrum. It was so bad that I was considered to be one of the kids that were at risk of being held back. I was given one last chance: attend and pass summer school. It took every ounce of energy and dignity in me to not only agree to go but to also pass summer school. One of the very first steps I took four years ago was to take the more “conservative” route to obtain a biomedical engineering degree –as advised by my mentor who is also a biomedical engineer. That route is getting an engineering undergraduate degree and then getting a master’s degree in biomedical engineering. With that in mind, I decided to pursue a computer engineering degree for my bachelor’s because I envisioned it helping me decipher the nervous system as if it were a computer network system. Those artificial organs need to send and receive signals to the rest of the nervous system to work properly; much like a client sends and receives packets to a computer network to carry out its tasks.
