Imagine, it’s the year of 1932, on a hot summer day and it is over 90 degrees. Picture the muggy feeling, with sunscreen and sweat piled on. Iowa weather, being Iowa weather. Of course something to help cool down is a necessity right now but, where is there to go? Birdsalls’s is an ice cream parlor that is widely known for its homemade ice cream, great customer service, and essentially its role in Mason City’s history.
Birdsalls Ice Cream Co. opened in April, 1931 on N. Federal Avenue, according to the Globe Gazette in Mason City. The ice cream shop was opened by a couple known as, Addison and Esther Birdsall. Today, teenagers can work at Birdsalls as a part time job because it is an easy going work environment. But back then, the ice cream parlor was more family employed than it is now. According to a Birdsalls article in a Globe Gazette newspaper, Escher has hired hundreds of people to work at the shop. But meanwhile, Mark Repp got married to Pat Jorgensen, she worked at the shop too with her sisters, Pam and Peg. Escher described Mark and Pat in an interview saying, “Mark and Pat are really the glue that holds this place together.”
Birdsalls has grown a lot over the years from its ice cream flavors to its employees but it always had the same style it does today. The ice cream shop has a very “classic” vibe, as it was created in 1931 and never changed its theme. Another reason why it stands out from the rest of the modern ice cream businesses that we have today. Birdsalls reputation has evolved so much since the shop was first started. Birdsalls even got national recognition for being one of the top five, ice cream parlors in the Midwest in 2013. People go out of there way to make a trip to Birdsalls, even coming from different
