The Study Hour Club and The University of Toledo sponsored the event. They co-sponsored The Black History Month Celebration. This event was February 6, 2016. It was the start of Black History Month. The celebration was a lecture luncheon that celebrated African Americans during the start of Black History Month. Including the lunch and the lecture, the event lasted two and half-hours. The Office of Multicultural Student Success was also a key contributor of the event as far as the promotion and the ticket collection tables. The demographic of the audience of the event was predominately African Americans, with small groups of whites, Latinos, and etc. Also, the event housed a large group of UT students and faculty and staff, community leaders, and Toledo Public Schools. In total, there were roughly about 250+ people in attendance. The event was organized by having a few musical selections by various people, the introductions of the guest speaker, lunch was served, and finally the speaker spoke. Johnson’s speech was insightful and enriching. With him being an African American man who has a strong idea of the daily struggles African-Americans face trying to pursue higher education dreams. I related to his philosophies; I too am a W.E.B DuBois believer. In the household I grew up in, education was key concept that was instilled in us. His speech made me reflect on the hardships that others and myself have endured while on the journey to earning a degree. Sitting in that room with hundreds of other minority students, faculty and staff members, and community leaders I saw something beautiful within the pain. I saw the triumph that glowed on the faces of these distinguishe and soon to be distinguished leaders. I saw how education can make a difference in
