In order to tell this story effectively the author uses many techniques to lure the reader and hook them in. The author uses dialogue to give perspective and set the problem, also using inner thinking do learn what the main character ethics are, and lastly reader knows more that the character to get you predicting and eager to read more.
One of the techniques that the author uses in the book is dialogue. This is shown by the following evidence. To begin, In the book on Pg.52 “Are war has begun, the Germans have invaded Holland, Belgium, and Luxemburg.”This piece of evidence sets up the problem by showing that through Gustaves boldness that other big things have been happening and it also move the climax of the story along. Jewish boys get circumcised as a baby, this is a tell tale sign that he is Jewish. By Philippe doing this he is showing that he is with Germany and that he is out to “get” Gustave. I think this was very bad because how would Philippe feel if Gustave did the same back to him, he would be embarrassed to. Also, this is another way the author uses the narrative technique of reader knows more than the character pg.162 “ Imagine how convenient it is for Monsieur Menier and how convenient it is for his visitors, his guest walk into his house in occupied France then walk out of his grounds here and they are on the unoccupied Zone.” This gets the readers predicting what the castle could be used for in the future of the book.
