Within the first stanza of the poem, Horace recounts of the time of which they had both shared in Brutus’s army, and speaks of how it was at the fault of Brutus that they had been led into peril and defeat; it states “O saepe mecum tempus in ultimum deducte Bruto militiae duce”(having been led often with me into extreme peril with Brutus as leader of the military).
