For the company it provides a safety measure with more job coverage in the event of employee resignations and absenteeism, and sudden increases in a particular job activity. If an employee is sick or if an area in the business is short-handed an employee that is cross trained can make the lateral move to fill in. employees who are cross trained seem to take their job more seriously and often perform better because they know many areas of the company and know their value to the company. They perform a variety of tasks, and have a degree of loyalty which is demonstrated by their willingness to learn aspects across the board at their company. The employee becomes more valuable to the company because he/she has the skills to fill more than just their position. The company gains because there is more flexibility in the workers. Cross training is also a personal benefit to the employee as it can avoid injuries from repetitive actions, as well as, prevent boredom.
