Constantine 1 started the civilization known as the Byzantine Empire in 330 A.D and it lasted until it fell in 1453 after it was conquered when the Ottoman army marched on Constantinople during Constantine X1’s reign. It was built on the site of a Greek colony. The Byzantine Empire saw a rich tradition of literature, art, and learning. It also stood as a great military buffer between the invasion from Asia and Europe.
One of the highlights of the Byzantine Empire was its geographical location which helped make it very hard to breach it’s defenses and it also benefited from a good number of manpower to help stop invasion. Another great highlight that helped the Byzantine Empire survive long after the fall of Rome was its strong administrative center and the stability of its political powers. (215-216) During the reign of Emperor Leo the third one of the highlights of the Byzantine Empire was the ban of the use of religious Icons and the worship of them as symbols which was eventually unbanned.(216-217) It was during the reign of Charlemagne, that Pope Leo the third crowned Charlemagne Emperor of the Romans. …show more content…
This helped it be more diverse then some parts of Rome had been before with importance being given to the Greek language and students of Byzantium receiving an education in Greek history. Another item of note is how a Byzantium education was open to both male and females and its commitment to female education was unusual for its time.
