The Merriam Webster dictionary defines human trafficking as the illegal movement and possession of people for profit in forced labor or commercial sexual exploitation. “Every country and continent, no matter what type of economy, is experiencing and is effected by this obstacle” (sherescuehome.org). Human trafficking is a world-wide problem that is centered around the Eastern Hemisphere, typically in Asia. Millions of people are currently slaves on this planet and Asian countries struggle to play a role in this fight due to their lack of development and their greediness resulting from profit. “Bangladesh is a source and transit country for forced labor and prostitution to India, Pakistan, and the Middle East” (sherescuehome.org) Most of the people crossing the border into Bangladesh are looking for work that doesn’t even exist and are tricked by traffickers who have paid off the border guards. Girls that find themselves as victims undergo sexual exploitation or bonded servitude especially into India where they are used for forced marriages. “Boys that are sent to the Middle East are used as racing jockeys and are starved to keep their weight low” (unicef.org) In Bangladesh, the rural and impoverished places of the country are at most risk because of the lack of police and lack of money which makes it easier for desperate people to make desperate decisions. One town, known as Shah Porir Dwip, contains victims that speak of the multi-million dollar business of smuggling that has taken over the place they call home. There are camps near the Malaysian border containing hostages of family debt who have a tag on their head of around $3000 dollars. Hundreds of boats have been found containing thousands of starving people who thought they were going to find well-paying work. Forced labor is defined as “work or services in which people are forced to do against their will under the threat of some form of punishment,” which is basically slavery (antislavery.org). Debt bondage, or peonage, is when a person or even a family is used for work to pay off some sort of a debt and is the most common type of slavery. According to Duhaime’s Law Dictionary, sex trafficking is when a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the person induced to perform such act has not attained 18 years of age. An example of this is sex trafficking and “it makes up 58 percent of trafficking totals”
