Isaac is a 10-year-old fourth grade student at Rowayton Elementary School in Norwalk, Connecticut. He is a year older than his peers because he was retained in Kindergarten due to lack of sufficient progress in both reading and math. While in first through second grades he struggled with reading skills, but was always able to meet benchmark goals throughout the school year. In third grade, Isaac could not meet benchmark goals consistently and he was entered into the SRBI process. He has since been receiving intervention primarily in reading and writing on a daily basis.…
In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. Context: Denton Elementary is a small school near the heart of Lansing. The school itself is in pretty nice shape. It is newly painted thanks to the teachers. The Bucksbaum Early Entrance Academy is a program that accelerates high school students past their junior or senior year directly to college. What this really means is that the members of this culture are a bunch of children who really wanted to get out of high school. We all were a part of the gifted programs in our schools, and we all decided we were too smart for that. Lacy Elementary School is in the process of implementing Positive Behavior Support Systems, but has seen a large influx of bullying in the cafeteria during lunch hours. Bullying involves any type of psychological or physical abuse and includes such behaviors as teasing or taunting (Whitted & Duper, 2005). Bullying can also be defined as the use of hostile actions that is meant to be disparaging to the individual (Long & Alexander, 2010). While studying the definitions of bullying and reading observations of Lacy Elementary School, bullying became prevalent during lunch hours, which involves large numbers of students gathering in a common area. Year round schooling is a system that provides students with a longer period of education throughout the year by decreasing the amount of vacation days. It rids of most of summer vacation and replaces it with extra months of schooling. Although most students may think of this as inferior to the traditional arrangement, there are many pros and reasons to support it.
