I’ve chosen engineering as my career path because I believe that, in the sort of society we are becoming with technology being so important, that engineering will be one of the most important professions. I feel the field of engineering is fundamental to the technological advancements as a society. The second and main reason I chose engineering as my career path is that ever since I was a young kid I was always fascinated with math and how things work using calculations. The third and final reason I chose engineering as my career path is because I love using my brain and math is a really fun way to exercise my brain. Civil engineers use the principle of calculus, trigonometry, and other advanced topics in mathematics for analysis, design, and troubleshooting in their work. Only licensed civil engineers can sign the plans for infrastructure projects. This makes it imperative that civil engineers be able to monitor and evaluate the work at the job site as a project progresses. Civil engineers must be able to communicate with other professionals, such as architects, landscape architects, and urban planners. This means civil engineers must be able to write clear reports that people without an engineering background can follow. A civil engineer’s tasks typically involve the following: evaluate survey reports, maps and other data to plan projects, consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors in planning stages, test soils to determine adequacy and strength of foundations, test building materials such as concrete, asphalt, steel, for use in particular projects, and calculate costs for materials and equipment. Civil engineers must acquire a license to provide their services to the public; the board for engineering and technology must approve the program. The curriculum includes classes in physics, mathematics, project manager, design and specific topics in civil engineering. After completion of basic courses in most dub-disciplines of civil engineering, they move onto specialize in one or more sub-discipline at advanced levels. While an undergraduate degree normally provides successful students with industry-accredited qualification, some academics institution offer post-graduate degrees, which allow students to specialize in their particular interest.
