I grew up in an upper-middle class, white, Catholic family, in the middle of suburban Cary, North Carolina. Culture was a term introduced in school with pictures of exotic places and bright wardrobes; history lived inside textbooks with stories of war and migration. My fourth grade family history project contained one piece of information: my great-grandmother sailed to the States from Italy in 1904. The little history and culture introduced by my family showed me who I do not want to become. While the teachings of Christianity shaped me into a compassionate, open-hearted person, I struggle to accept the dogma that followed it.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

Obtaining my undergraduate degree was one of the highlights of my life. By day I attended classes, studied hard and completed my student observation and student teaching requirements. On nights and weekends I worked at a country club working as many shifts as I could to pay for my courses at St. John Fisher College. When I graduated in the spring of 2005 with my Bachelor of Arts in History and my initial teaching certification in hand, I was excited to teach and challenge the young minds of our great state. As I sent application after application to every school district in the tri-city area, I quickly realized that teachers in Western New York State are a dime-a-dozen.…

After years of working in the Social Services field, I felt that my heart needed a hiatus from the gut wrenching circumstances in which many of the families I assisted found themselves in. I could no longer bear the responsibility of a child’s life in my hands due to the bureaucracy and conditions that plagued many of the people in my caseload. The stress of such an endeavor was affecting my health. I still wanted to be helpful and to try to make a difference in peoples’ lives but not at the expense of my own. I took some time off to reflect on what my next step would be and to be more available to my youngest child whom was entering the third grade at a different school.…

In the end, I could stand and look from the front of my class, not say a word and get complete silenced from students, Rust my mentor said he was very impressed with it being…

1 I come from a long line of educators and administrators on both sides of my family. Various relatives of mine have taught me to understand and appreciate the importance of education. This being the case, they have inspired my decision to be a teacher, preferably an elementary school teacher.
