Agency Introduction
The name of the agency is Social Model Recovery Systems (SMRS) and they have twelve locations that consist of residential treatment programs, prevention programs, and outpatient care clinics in both Los Angeles and Orange Counties. I was placed at the River Community residential treatment program located in Azusa. I had my interview with the Program Director, Justin Womer.
Travel to Agency On the way to the appointment, I was familiar with the Azusa area and it all seemed rather easy. Once I exited the freeway I traveled north and was unsure of where I was going because all of a sudden it turned into a one lane road into the San Gabriel Mountains. • To share research and knowledge through training, consultation, and educational initiatives.
SMRS is a non-profit agency providing behavioral health treatment and community prevention and education services since 1986. They have twelve core beliefs, which includes that the agency is engaged in learning about the communities that surround them while promoting mutual change to better contribute to the communities. Also, they pursue opportunities that develop healthy relationships with communities so that relationships of support, assistance and encouragement within the community create partnerships that benefit each person and the community as a whole. The phone call I received to set up the interview was with a secretary, so I couldn’t gauge the personality of the actual person I was going to meet (Mr. Womer). I was a little surprised at how isolated the agency is but I understand the importance of people in treatment for substance abuse to be away from negative people, triggers, and stressors. Being in the waiting room eased my anxiety because it felt like the type of environment where I could get along with everyone since I am an easy going person. During the interview with the field instructor, I felt at ease since his office was filled with USC memorabilia and had such a warm and friendly tone with me. He seemed eager to get to know about me as well as asking me typical interview questions. He was even nice enough to give me some tips to navigate and get through the MSW program at USC. He seemed pleased to know that I am eager to learn and make my way into the mental health field. After the meeting with the field instructor, I felt relieved and joyful. I was glad to have an internship offered to me on the spot and I was happy that I would be working close with Mr. Womer, a psychiatrist, an MFT, and a physician’s assistant. I know I can learn a lot from the multi-disciplinary team and gain so much knowledge from such a unique program that aims to assist people who have both mental illness and chemical
