In the text, Proof, Catherine struggles with identity by hiding her proof because of the way women are overlooked in the mathematical field. During the beginning of the play, Auburn portrays Catherine as a simple girl who had to drop out of school to take care of her father but instead she’s a mathematical genius who hides her identity. Catherine decides to keep her proof a secret until she can reveal it to someone that will believe her or to someone she trust. These decisions displays her apprehension to reveal her identity because of the gender bias that occurs in the math and science field throughout the play.
