Cell Phones And Cancer

Improved Essays
I have a hard time saying either way whether cell phones can cause cancer. My dilemma comes from my mother’s personal experience with cell phones and cancer, and the information presented in a few of the articles refuting the idea of cell phones causing cancer. My mother’s experience stems from working the radiology department at my local hometown hospital. She has seen and heard about a few cases of young women developing cancer where they keep their phone. Because she is employed at the hospital she receives articles that lean towards the idea of cell phones causing cancer. She has started telling me to not keep my cell phone in my bra, this is a recent development of hers. This catches my attention because my mother is not one of those crazy health care workers that takes everything said for gold. For her recent interest in this matter and her personal experience it is hard for me not to disregard the possibility for cell phones causing cancer.
There are a few scientific articles that I read today that make it hard for me to believe the possibility of cell phones causing cancer. The one that comes to mind is the “Can You Hear Me Now? The Truth about Cell Phones and Cancer” by Michael Shermer. In his article he points out the electromagnetic radiation that is put out from a cell phone is 480 kilojoules per mole. Cell phones waves are

Ms. Moyer points out that Mr. Shermer glossed over other important facts and possibilities that cell phone waves may have effect on different parts of the cell, not including the DNA of a cell. She also brings up that we still do not fully understand how cancer functions and what triggers it. I think she was right to bring up the idea that just because cell phone waves are not strong enough to damage DNA it may damage something else in the cell that could trigger the cell to go crazy and start

What are health sissies coursed by RadioWaves Radio Waves emit Radio Frequency (RF) radiation, which can give off a high or low RF energy. If the radio wave gives of a high RF it can course serious health effects coursing burns and tissue damage which can be absorbed into large amounts of water, food and fluids and can be the course of cancer. If the radio wave gives of a low RF it still can course burns and tissue damage, but can not be the course of cancer. Low Radio Waves can not course cancer since it is a non-inoizing radiation, other non-ionizing radiation include visible light, Microwaves and infrared radiation. All of these non-inoizing do not have enough energy to course the inoization of atoms and molecules to change in the human…

In the article, Your Phone Could Ruin Your Life, by Kristen Lewis it says, “digital distraction can be harmful, both mentally and physically”(Lewis 9). I think this means that young people are spending too much time on electronics both day and night. I can support this because it says that “80% of teenagers sleep with their phones nearby”(Lewis 7),and also, “your phone screen gives off a kind of light that tells your brain to stay awake”(Lewis 9). Another thing that supports this is that when you sleep with your phone under your pillow the radiation can cause cancer.…

This study of cell phones and the risk of brain cancer is an observational study. In an Observational study, a researcher can just watch what happens to series of people in a group. In the presented study, researcher can merely watch the effect of cellphone usage in group with brain cancer and a group who did not have brain cancer. This is not an experimental study as there were no treatments that changed the response to the study. The value of one variable changes the value of other.…

However, the majority of the people had no information about the radiation exposure they received constantly from cell phones. Many of the people surveyed had no clear idea of what harm they were exposed to, or about the level of radiation they were receiving. The research found does not completely support the idea of dependency and addiction to cell phones. It is a surprising discovery because from the photograph that was taken (see Fig. 15) what people say is contradicted.…

In an article composed by the American Cancer Society it states, “The 13-country INTERPHONE study, the largest case-control study done to date, … found no link between brain tumor risk and the frequency of calls, longer call time, or cell phone use for 10 or more years” (American Cancer Society). A study as widespread at this found no link between cell phone use and brain tumor risk, therefore substantiating the argument that cell phones do not cause cancer. The involvement of thirteen countries and the longevity of the experiment provides a viable spread of data. In fact, the INTERPHONE study had another component that included an examination of more than 1,000 people with acoustic neuromas and more than 2,000 people without tumors; the results still confirmed that there was no overall link between cell phone use and acoustic…

The article starts by introducing the reader to the increased number of adolescent cell phone users, which in turn means that the level of radio frequency has also increased. This is of some concern due to the fact that “radiation exposures are higher for children than adults because children have thinner skulls” (Rosenberg 67). The article then goes on to introduce current and past research studies that are working to find a correlation between cell phone usage and brain cancer. In one of these studies, mice will be subjected to the radiation produced by cell phones several times a day to see how the frequencies affect their brains. The author then presents recommendations, from societies such as the American Cancer Society, on how to minimize radiation exposure.…

Many people are concerned about the dangers that cell phones pose, and they are told that keeping it a greater distance from their heads and using devices such as headphones can diminish much of the radiation; all of which is true. Unfortunately, since the technology industry has made the invention of wireless headphones, if people use their cell phones in conjunction with these devices, the radiation dosage can be even greater than normal. Using Bluetooth, the main type of wireless communication between devices, can have just as much electromagnetic radiation as talking on the phone. One team realized this and began to test the power density rating and the specific absorption rate (SAR), both of which measure radiation dosages. This team…
