In the beginning of the book my emotions for Isabel and Ruth became stronger. As Isabel and Ruth lose their parents and the elderly woman that they worked for it struck me in an emotional way. When the elderly woman's son sold Isabel and Ruth to the Lockton’s I was astonished that Ruth and Isabel would be sold, I would have thought people would care about two lonely

When she losses her sister I cried because it's hard to imagine a girl of my age losing all her family including her five year old sister Ruth. Isabel is very strong especially through what she has passed through losing all that she has had in the past years just leaving. I could feel Isabel’s pain when she was getting the letter burned on to her cheek. I wouldn't have been able to work for madam Lockton after what she did to Ruth and Isabel. I would have made her pay for what she did. This book struck me emotionally because I can't imagine losing my sister and losing my parents. My little sister might me teou
This book has a lot of American history in it. I knew that slaves were treated poorly but not as bad as Isabel and the other slaves in this story were treated. Isabel was treated poorly for something she could not control, something she could not change, her skin color. Chains has given me an interest to read more about slaves in America and how they were treated.

The book Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson has been a great journey throughout its pages. This book even had me crying. It has given me a different set of eyes in the viewpoint of American history especially for slaves. Isabel struggles to find her sister Ruth, no matter what it takes Isabel will do it for her baby

“Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons” in review Over the last quarter, i had the opportunity to read the book“Hang a Thousand Trees with Ribbons” by Ann Rinaldi. This book was about the african enslaved woman named Phillis Wheatley who lived in america during the periods before and after the civil war. It traced her journey with the Wheatley family in boston as she became not only a well educated woman, but the first published black poet in America in 1767. Some of the events that i most enjoyed reading about was for when Phillis got captured to cross the atlantic as an enslaved person and when the Wheatley's gave her a chance to become an educated person although it was unheard of. The author was great in including these events as they were…

How does Celia, A Slave by Melton A. McLaurin show the changing views of slavery in the United States? The year was 1619 when the first Dutch frigate sailed into the harbor of the colonial town of Jamestown, Virginia with its human cargo deep within its sweltering bowels. Unknowingly, the Dutch captain introduced the first captured Africans to the New World (North America) implanting the spores of a slavery system that evolved into an ordeal of unimaginable brutality and exploitation.…

This touches a lot of people, because they think about how upset and sad they would feel if their loved ones passed away or they themselves passed away. Also, the story involves slavery, that time period many people were treated cruelly and unfairly. The reader could feel sadness for those treated as inferior and feel anger towards those who could treat another human being that way. The story continues with the way the community treated Elijah.…

The system of slavery, which brutally exploited the labour of a large and primarily Black population, shaped the history of the United States of America for over four hundred years (Davis: African Slavery, Sept 28). A primary tactic that was implemented in the system was to eliminate any motive of forming black communities by discouraging family ties. Many slaves resorted to documenting and preserving these experiences of slave cruelty through slave narratives, a genre of literature similar to autobiographies. Slave narratives can be regarded as a source that appeals to collective humanity through the complicated and multilayered acts of resistance carried out by the protagonists against their masters. By using Harriet Jacobs’ narrative entitled…

Harriet Jacob’s Incidents In The Life Of A Slave Girl portrays her struggles as being a slave to a vile, abusive master, and the horrors she endured from it. Jacob’s courage and faith aided in her escape, and ultimately led her to liberty and freedom after being in hiding for seven years. Jacob’s describes that slavery “is terrible for men; but it is far more terrible” (Jacobs 66). This is because of certain challenges they faced.
