Chap 3 Assignment Questions 1. Explain how sleep patterns are characterized over the course of life: infancy, childhood, adolescence/emerging adulthood and adulthood/aging (briefly for each of the 4 stages When we consider the sleep patterns during infancy, we have learned that newborns need approximately 16 to 17 hours a day but, some sleep more than others. Newborns sleep is sporadic: so the need to eat and to change diaper might modify the sleep pattern. Although, the range is from a low of about 10 hours or to high 21 hours per day. After three or four months, infants begin to develop a new pattern in which sleep becomes consolidated into a longer period. However, after the recent research they conclude that …show more content…
So, regarding the recommendation of the experts young children need 11 to 13 hours of sleep each night. However, children who do not get adequate sleep are more likely to have problems at school and…others. In order, things might change a little with adolescence. Adolescence is required to sleep eight hours or more. For those who had inadequate sleep time were more likely to feel tired and cranky. According to a research conducted by Mary Carskadon in (2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2011), she has found that adolescents sleep an average of 9 hours and 25 minutes. And Carskadon also found that older adolescents are often more sleepy during the day than are younger adolescents. In fact, her research suggests that adolescent biological clocks undergo a hormonal phase shift as they get older, because the shift was cause by a delay in the nightly presence of the hormone melatonin produce by the pineal gland found in the brain. Many adults don’t get adequate sleep. The average American adult gets just under seven hours of sleep at night. The experts conclude that an increasing of 8 hours of sleep or more per day are necessary for optimal performance the next day. Beginning in the middle adulthood and continuing through late adulthood, the timing of sleep also changes. In adulthood the pattern of sleep is associated with many of the sleep problems of aging. 2) Choose one life stage below and describe how
