Writing: Character
During an interview Markus said he said “Here’s a book set during the war. Everyone says war and death are best friends” (“In His Own Words. A Conversation With Markus Zusak”). He choose Death as the narrator because death and war were related to each other. (“Ydstie”). He interviewed his parents and did a lot of research, then he went to Germany to check on his manuscript. (Zusak, Interview with Christina Hamlett). Marcus went to a Jewish museum, Jewish survivors showed him around the museum. (Zusak, Interview with John Hanlon).
Markus describes Death as a person, he said “When I think of Death, I hear the voice, and then I see the sky, the earth, the trees and all of us. I wanted Death to talk about all of those …show more content…
After a few years he didn’t like the idea so he changed it to writing about Germany and Austria, where his parents homeland is. He changed the location of the story from Sydney to Germany. (Zusak, Interview with Heidi Stillman).

He was surprised that it was filming in Berlin. He enjoyed having a movie be made on something he worked hard on. (Zusak, Interview with Michelle Pauli).
Markus thinks that his book can be read by anybody. The United States had published it at a YA (young adult) but the Australian ones published it for adults. (“Markus Zusak Biography”) “I never think of this book's audience in terms of age. I honestly thought it wouldn't have any audience at all, and that's how it became the book it did. I thought, "No one's going to read this, I might as well do exactly what I want."I stopped worrying about the audience and that has to happen with every book I think.... that's when your true audience starts to love a book the most—when you trust them enough to come with you anyway,” (Zusak, Interview with Heidi Stillman).
Markus had many sucessful books. The first three books he wrote were The Underdog, Fighting Ruben Wolfe, and When Dogs Cry. He won many awards in Australia and the U.S. The book I am the Messanger won Australian Children’s Book Council Book of the Year Award in 2003 and the NSW Premier’s Literary Award the same year.
